Walla Walla YMCA Receives Swim Lesson Grant for Milton-Freewater Pool
Walla Walla YMCA Receives Swim Lesson Grant for Milton-Freewater Pool
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Walla Walla, WA – The summer season is almost here with the Milton-Freewater pool scheduled to open at 9:00 a.m. on May 27. The Walla Walla YMCA will again serve the City of Milton-Freewater by providing pool operations and aquatics programs at the city’s Joe Humbert Family Aquatic Center. Aquatics programs include water aerobics, open swim and swim lessons.
This summer, the Y is pleased to be able to offer free swim lessons for up to 100 Milton-Freewater children. Families must live in Milton-Freewater for their children to qualify. All lessons for children ages 6 months to 12 years will be taught by the Y’s American Red Cross certified swim instructors. This summer swim lesson program is made possible by a grant that the Y received from Y-USA. On opening day of the newly-heated pool, the Y encourages youth and children to come to the pool to complete a quick swimming skills assessment anytime between 9:00 – 11:00 a.m. This helps students excel in their swim lessons by assigning them to the best course for their current skill level.
Swim lessons will be offered in sessions, with each session running for two weeks (8 days) on Monday-Thursday from between 10:00 – 11:30 a.m. and 4:00 – 5:30 p.m. Each day’s class lasts 40 minutes. The Y’s Learn-to-Swim program focuses on building skills one step at a time. There are six levels of swim lessons that range from an initial introduction for first-time swimmers where youth learn to be comfortable in the water, to advanced lessons where youth develop skill proficiency. By giving children the opportunity to master one element before moving on to the next, swim classes make it easy to build confidence in the water.
“We are thrilled to be chosen for this highly competitive grant and to be able to provide free swim lessons for children in Milton-Freewater,” said Erika Miller, Y Aquatics Director. “The Y has a long tradition of providing Learn-to-Swim lessons in the communities we serve and our swim lessons, together with the 8-week long summer day camp we offer in Milton-Freewater, are a great way to help keep kids engaged.” To enroll in Milton Freewater swim lessons, families will need to register online by visiting: http://wwymca.org/aquatics. Registration opens on May 15.
